The Fest X

Howdy!

I'm grateful to get to work with a lot of excellent bands on their records and merchandise for a living, but honored to have been asked to take part again in Florida's 3 day music FEST, now in its 10th year! The simultaneous gallery show showcases many artists, often those who work with bands and record labels, especially native to FL.  I myself got my big "break" working for a band in Gainesville in 1996 and continue to this very day.

I simply chose to do something fun and exclusive for the art show, especially to celebrate their tenth anniversary, somewhat as a way of giving back to the community and scene that has given so much to me

you can read more about the art show HERE. thanks for reading!

Ramiel!

in addition to working with a lot of great bands and record labels, I am also currently pursuing another long-time/term dream of mine entering the field of comics. I've already shared things like my Strawberry Shortcake covers, and will be showing other fun creator owned works in the future, but today I thought i'd give a sneak peak of something a little different... work as a "colorist" on a new limited series!

Ramiel is a story by Javier Grillo-Marxuach, writer & producer on the first two seasons of Lost and current show-runner for Charlie's Angels. He asked the incredible Steven Gendron to do the pencils, and me to do colors and paint the rest. Around the time of San Diego Comic Con we had a great front page article & interview on Newsarama you should read HERE. The book will be out soon by APE Entertainment, and there are already a few SDCC exclusive copies out there...

While I didn't get to do the pencils here, I think Steve's work is great and very distinct, and I tried very much to bring a lot more to the table than I thought was even possible. The entire collaborative experience has been one of the best i've ever been a part of

here you can see Steve's pencils and my paints:

and here's a few "sneak peak" pages (don't tell anyone!)

see you in the funny papers!

Album Design

hi everyone! it occurs to me i haven't gotten to share with some of you a few of the records i had fun working on this year. it's been a good balance of design as well as some clever packaging, and there are some ambitious ones coming up in the future too... in the meantime, in addition to all the drawing and painting i get to do, the restless artist in me loves the balance and practice of working on the variety of ideas and execution these fun vinyl records provide

(feel free to click images for larger views if you like)

first up was a one-of-a-kind die-line i got to work on (and it was a last minute rush too!) but the result was something we're all very proud of

i loved being able to use textures of papers and record sleeves that have been stacking up in the studio in order to give this LP some weathered meaning

these are the lyrics made scrap book style for an envelope that will house the vinyl LP

this was a fun take on the band's home state flag of FL based on the themes of the 7". we may actually screen-print actual flags for the release

Stephen Egerton is not only a mastermind turning knobs recording some of the best punk rock albums today, but he's the legendary guitarist of the Descendants and All. very excited and proud getting to work closely with him

for the right projects, i am sometimes asked to do hand done type for the lyrics page. this is as labor intensive as some of the full fledged illustrations i do for some bands, but the little touch makes a huge difference in my eyes (as a fan of music and packaging)

thanks for reading! just another facet of what i do, and a dream of mine i am grateful to be immersed in

Saint November

Recently I was asked to create the mascot for his new label for music, art, and more on the Restless Coast in the south of the UK. always happy to collaborate with like minded individuals, and eager to help a fan & friend from across the pond, i jumped at the chance.

sketches (on the plane from Florida)
black & white studies, because any logo needs to look great in stark B&W
color studies to see where he wanted to go:

a variation on the final, with some watercolor on top of the digital inking
(feel free to click on any of these for a larger view)
keep an eye out for all the amazing things Liam and St. November are doing HERE!

Happy Holidays!

Playtime!

(click for larger image)

This friday in Philadelphia, December 3rd, altruistic designer Mat Kerfren & the Autumn Society brings holiday cheer with "Playtime", a fantastic charity show dedicated to raising money for Toys For Tots.

i was initially asked to illustrate the "sheer joy in receiving a toy" for the flyer and advertisements. well it was a real joy to illustrate joy here.

Less Than Jake presents: The TV/EP !

When the band went to record 16 cover songs (in 11 minutes!) from various television theme songs and commercials, they wanted to give the impression that pop-punk has taken over the air waves and you are randomly flipping the channels.

that being said, we've engineered a very special collector's edition 7" vinyl record (to go along with the CD and the digital, available now) where, depending on how you fold the panels of your record, you will actually be able to "change the channels" and determine your own cover through a die-cut television screen!

channel 2....

channel 3...

and the "inside" of your tv (with some fun filaments)...

it's a strangely proud moment for me personally, when there are plenty of people who make me doubt my versatility as an unmarketable product, that there can't be a whole lot of folks who would've excitedly tackled all the visual parodies and styles the band asked for here. it's another reason it makes our long friendship and these kinds of projects so especially meaningful.

This piece was done for a group artist exhibition "...exploring all the elements that make Halloween creepy, imaginative, and fun."

and yes, i couldn't resist the urges to add some glow-in-the-dark flourishes on the tentacle suckers for extra fun spookiness...

Happy Halloween!
